History In Carlow

History

Carlow_Castle2.jpgCounty Carlow (Bed and Breakfasts, Carlow, Ireland) name originates from the Gaelic Ceatharlach, meaning quadruple lake. Many monkish establishments were found here in the early days of Christianity in Ireland. These were later pillaged by the Viking invaders. The 1100s saw the arrival of the Anglo-Normans, who held Carlow (Accommodation, Carlow, Ireland) as a frontier territory, constructing some of the finest fortifications in the land to defend themselves against the bordering celtic tribes. In the 1300s, the legendary Art Oge became the King of Leinster. Carlow_County_Museum.jpgHe defeated King Richard II in numerous battles, leaving the indigenous Celts thoroughly in control of Carlow (Holiday Apartments, Carlow, Ireland). This control ended after the forces of Oliver Cromwell seized and resettled the area. During the 1798 rebellion, Carlow was the scene of a bloody battle, in which 600 Irish freedom fighters were killed.

celtic.jpgKnown as the Celtic centre of Ireland, this county sparkles in the summertime and is bright with flowers, not just in the city, but in every open green space. The main thing Carlow (Holiday Cottages, Carlow, Ireland) has to offer the visitor is scenery, especially in the south of the county. A charmingblackstairs_mountains.jpg county with a tremendous number of Celtic monuments and historic sights. The most attractive areas are the Blackstairs Mountains in the south, and along the valley of the River Barrow, which for most of its length, forms the border with County Kilkenny.
